NDIS Supported
Independent Living (SIL)

SIL is more than just a service; it’s a pathway to
independence, empowerment, and community involvement.

SIL supports individuals who need assistance with daily tasks but are working towards greater autonomy. Through SIL Homes and SIL accommodation, participants can live in a comfortable home environment while receiving the necessary support for personal care, daily activities, and community engagement.

Below, you can find more information about SIL housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our Sandhurst Estate SIL home, including vacancies, support, accessibility, compatibility and the transition process.

1. Where is the home located?

The home is located within Sandhurst Estate, near Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. The exact address is provided when a private inspection is confirmed to protect the privacy and security of residents.

2. Is there currently a vacancy?

Yes, the home currently has immediate capacity. All placements are subject to participant needs, funding, compatibility and a successful suitability assessment.

3. Who may be suitable for this home?

The home may suit an adult NDIS participant seeking Supported Independent Living in a comfortable, welcoming environment.

We consider each person individually, including their support needs, goals, routines, communication style, accessibility requirements and preferred lifestyle.

4. What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living, commonly called SIL, provides assistance with everyday tasks so a participant can live as independently as possible.

This may include personal care, meal preparation, medication support, household tasks, community access and building daily living skills.

5. Is SIL funding included with the house?

SIL funding is separate from accommodation costs. A participant will generally require appropriate NDIS funding or be working with their Support Coordinator and the NDIA to establish suitable funding before moving in.

Bright Journey can assist with information, assessments, transition planning and supporting documentation.

6. Is the property an enrolled SDA dwelling?

Please speak with Bright Journey about the participant's housing and accessibility requirements. SIL and SDA are different NDIS supports, and eligibility must be considered individually.

We will never assume that a property is suitable without completing the appropriate checks.

7. Is the home accessible?

Accessibility and bathroom suitability must be assessed against the participant's individual needs.

If someone uses a wheelchair, shower chair, commode, hoist or other mobility equipment, our team will arrange a detailed property inspection and compatibility assessment before confirming a placement.

8. What support can Bright Journey provide?

Depending on the participant's assessed needs and NDIS funding, support may include:

  • Personal care and daily routines
  • Medication assistance or administration
  • Meal planning and preparation
  • Household and domestic assistance
  • Community access
  • Appointment support
  • Building independence and daily living skills
  • Support with communication and emotional regulation
  • Health-related routines and approved equipment
  • Active or inactive overnight support where funded and appropriate

A personalised support plan is developed with each participant and their support network.

9. What staffing ratio is available?

Staffing arrangements are based on each participant's approved funding, assessed needs and the overall household support model.

Ratios may include shared or individual support at different times of the day. Bright Journey will explain the proposed roster before any service agreement is signed.

10. Can a participant keep their existing support workers?

Potentially. Existing workers may apply to join Bright Journey and continue supporting the participant.

All workers must successfully complete Bright Journey's recruitment and onboarding requirements, including mandatory NDIS screening, reference checks, qualifications, training, competency assessments and compliance requirements.

11. Will the participant have their own bedroom?

Yes. Each resident has their own private bedroom and shares agreed common areas of the home. Bedroom availability and suitability will be confirmed during the inspection process.

12. Can participants personalise their bedroom?

Absolutely. We want each participant's bedroom to feel like their own space.

Personal furniture, photographs, bedding, decorations and meaningful belongings are welcome, subject to safety and property requirements.

13. How are potential housemates assessed?

We complete a thoughtful housemate compatibility assessment. This considers routines, communication, interests, sensory preferences, support needs, sleep patterns, risks, social preferences and the type of household environment each person wants.

No placement is confirmed simply to fill a vacancy. The home needs to feel right for everyone.

14. Are family members and Support Coordinators involved?

Yes. With the participant's consent, we welcome involvement from family members, nominees, Support Coordinators, allied health professionals, Behaviour Support Practitioners and other important members of the participant's support team.

15. What are the accommodation costs?

Rent, utilities, groceries and other ordinary living expenses are separate from NDIS-funded disability supports.

The full costs and responsibilities will be clearly explained before the participant makes a decision or signs any agreement.

16. Does the home include access to Sandhurst Estate amenities?

Please contact Bright Journey for current information about access to Sandhurst Estate amenities and what may be available to residents of the home.

17. Are pets allowed?

Pets may be considered individually. Approval depends on property requirements, household compatibility, animal welfare, participant responsibilities and any applicable estate conditions.

18. Can we inspect the home before applying?

Yes. Participants, families, nominees, Support Coordinators and relevant professionals are welcome to arrange a private inspection.

Please let us know beforehand about any mobility, communication, sensory or accessibility requirements so we can make the visit comfortable.

19. How quickly can someone move in?

The home has immediate capacity, but the timeframe depends on participant choice, compatibility, funding, assessments, agreements and transition requirements.

We can work collaboratively to support an efficient transition without rushing important safeguards.

20. What does the transition process involve?

Bright Journey can develop a personalised transition plan that may include:

  • Participant consent and information sharing
  • Funding and roster review
  • Property and accessibility assessment
  • Housemate compatibility assessment
  • Medication and health handover
  • Behaviour Support continuity
  • Worker introductions
  • Trial visits or staged transitions
  • Move-day planning
  • Seven-day, 30-day and 90-day reviews
21. What happens if the participant is unsure?

There is no pressure to make an immediate decision.

Where appropriate, we can arrange additional visits, meetings with the support team and a staged transition so the participant can become familiar with the home, staff and household environment.

22. How do we make an enquiry?

Contact Bright Journey to discuss the participant's needs or arrange a private inspection.
