Changing Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers can be a major decision.
For some people, the reason is simple. They may be looking for a different home, another location or support that better reflects how they want to live.
For others, the decision may follow concerns about compatibility, communication, staffing, changing support needs, feeling unheard or simply recognising that their current arrangement is no longer the right fit.
Whatever the reason, changing SIL providers should never feel like packing a bag today and hoping everything works tomorrow.
A good transition protects continuity of support while keeping one person at the centre of every decision: the participant.
That is why Bright Journey Care Solutions is introducing Safe SIL September — an initiative designed to help participants, families, nominees, Support Coordinators and other professionals better understand what a safe and well-planned SIL transition can look like.
Your Home Should Feel Like Your Home
One of the most important principles of SIL is also one of the simplest: a participant’s home should feel like their home.
Workers enter the participant’s home to provide support. The person should have a voice in decisions affecting their everyday life, routines, privacy and living environment.
This includes something particularly important in shared living: who you live with.
Housemate compatibility should never be reduced to simply having an available bedroom. Participants should have opportunities to be involved in decisions concerning their home and the people they may share it with.
Why Might Someone Consider Changing SIL Providers?
There isn’t one correct reason.
A participant’s needs, preferences or goals may simply have changed.
Someone may want:
- A different location
- Better housemate compatibility
- Workers who better understand their communication
- Greater community participation
- Different routines
- More privacy or independence
- Stronger complex-support capability
- Better continuity of workers
- A different home environment
- Better communication with their provider
- Simply another choice
Exploring alternatives does not mean a participant has already decided to leave.
Looking at your options is part of having choice.
A Safe SIL Change Starts Before Moving Day
A successful transition involves much more than finding a suitable property.
Before moving, planning may need to consider:
Participant choice and consent — What does the participant want and how are they supported to communicate their preferences?
Funding and roster arrangements — What supports are funded and what staffing arrangements are required?
Health and clinical information — Does the incoming team have the information needed to safely provide support?
Medication — Are medications, current information, storage requirements and relevant protocols organised?
Behaviour Support — Are plans, strategies and required worker training in place?
Housemate compatibility — Has the participant had an opportunity to understand who they may be living with?
Worker introductions — Can important workers be introduced before the move?
A beautiful property does not compensate for an unsuitable support arrangement.
Move Day Should Be the Easy Part
If the transition has been properly planned, move day should not be the point when everyone starts asking questions.
Medication should already be organised. Equipment should be ready. Workers should understand the participant. Transport should be arranged. Essential supplies should be available.
Everyone should also know what to do if something does not go according to plan.
The transition plan does the hard work before the moving van arrives.
Support Should Continue After the Move
A SIL transition does not finish when the boxes are unpacked.
Bright Journey’s transition framework includes 7-day, 30-day and 90-day reviews to consider whether the new arrangement is actually working for the participant.
This includes looking at safety, housemate compatibility, worker matching, medication and health support, routines, Behaviour Support, staffing and meaningful community participation.
