Changes to Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider registration have raised important questions for NDIS participants, families and Support Coordinators.

From 1 July 2026, mandatory registration requirements commenced for providers delivering Supported Independent Living services. Eligible existing unregistered SIL providers wishing to continue delivering these supports were required to submit a valid registration application by 1 October 2026.

For participants, the most important question is simple: What does this mean for my home, my support workers and my everyday life?

At Bright Journey Care Solutions, we understand that uncertainty around disability support can be stressful, particularly when it involves where you live and the people supporting you.

If you currently receive SIL supports, here are five important questions worth asking your provider.

1. Is My SIL Provider Registered or Have They Applied for Registration?

The first step is understanding your provider’s registration status.

Ask your SIL provider:

  • Are you currently registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission?
  • If not, did you submit a valid registration application by 1 October 2026?
  • Are you permitted to continue delivering my SIL supports?
  • Will you keep participants informed about your registration progress?

An existing provider that submitted a valid application by the deadline may be able to continue providing SIL while its application is assessed, subject to the applicable requirements.

Why this matters: Knowing your provider’s status can help you understand whether any changes to your current arrangements may be necessary.

2. Will These Changes Affect My Current SIL Supports?

The introduction of mandatory SIL registration does not automatically change a participant’s NDIS plan or funding.

However, it is still important to ask whether your provider expects any changes to the way your supports are delivered.

Questions to consider include:

  • Will I continue receiving support from my existing workers?
  • Will my daily routines remain the same?
  • Are there any proposed changes to my roster or support arrangements?
  • Who should I contact if I have concerns?

Your safety, wellbeing and continuity of support should remain priorities throughout any changes.

3. What Happens to My Home if My SIL Provider Changes?

This is one of the most important questions for participants living in Supported Independent Living.

Your home and your support provider are not necessarily the same thing.

Depending on your housing and service agreements, it may be possible to change your SIL support provider without moving house.

Before agreeing to any changes, ask:

  • Who manages or owns my accommodation?
  • Is my housing agreement separate from my SIL support agreement?
  • Can I remain in my current home if I change support providers?
  • What are my rights under my existing agreements?
  • What alternative accommodation options are available if a move becomes necessary?

A change in support provider should not automatically be treated as a requirement to move.

Understanding your housing arrangements can help prevent unnecessary disruption.

4. How Will My Clinical and Support Information Be Transferred?

If you need to change SIL providers, a proper handover is essential.

Your new support team needs the right information to understand your health requirements, communication preferences, routines and individual support needs.

A transition plan may need to cover:

  • Medication management and administration arrangements
  • Health conditions and clinical care requirements
  • Behaviour Support Plans, where applicable
  • Communication needs and preferences
  • Mobility and personal care requirements
  • Daily routines and individual goals
  • Emergency contacts and response procedures
  • Equipment and assistive technology
  • Worker introductions and familiarisation

Information sharing should take place with appropriate consent and privacy safeguards.

A safe SIL transition is about more than moving between providers. It is about maintaining the support and stability participants depend on.

5. Who Will Coordinate My Transition if One Becomes Necessary?

Changing SIL providers can involve several people and organisations.

Without clear communication and planning, important details can be missed.

Ask your current provider:

  • Who will coordinate the transition?
  • Will my Support Coordinator be involved?
  • How will my family or nominated decision-makers be included?
  • When will I meet my new support workers?
  • How will essential supports continue during the change?
  • What happens if the proposed transition does not go to plan?

A coordinated transition should consider the participant’s preferences, support needs and existing agreements.

Where appropriate, participants should also have opportunities to meet prospective housemates and visit alternative accommodation before making decisions.

What if My Current SIL Provider Has Not Registered?

If your provider has not registered or submitted an application under the relevant requirements, it is important to seek clarification about whether they can continue delivering SIL supports.

This does not mean you should immediately move out or stop receiving essential support. The NDIA has said it will help participants understand their options and find a new registered provider if needed.

Instead:

  • Ask your provider to explain its registration status.
  • Speak with your Support Coordinator or relevant support network.
  • Review your housing and support agreements.
  • Seek guidance from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission where necessary. Our guide on how to make an NDIS complaint or raise a concern explains how.
  • Develop a transition plan if changing providers becomes necessary.
  • Avoid making rushed decisions about your accommodation or supports without understanding your options.
